The bildungsroman<\/strong>\u00a0(bill-DUNGZ-ro-men<\/em>, German for\u00a0“formation novel”<\/i>) is a genre of the novel which focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood. \u00a0The driving force behind the plot (and the major impact of the work) is the main character’s search for self, so change is thus extremely important.<\/p>\n The birth of the bildungsroman\u00a0is normally dated to the publication of\u00a0Goethe\u2019s\u00a0The Apprenticeship of Wilhelm Meister<\/i>\u00a0in 1796. \u00a0Although the bildungsroman\u00a0originated in Germany, it has had extensive influence first in Europe and later throughout the world. \u00a0Thomas Carlyle\u00a0translated Goethe\u2019s novel into English, and after its publication in 1824, many British authors wrote novels inspired by it (e.g. Dickens’ Great Expectations<\/em>).
