margin: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bentonenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/self.jpg\" alt=\"self\" width=\"1340\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bentonenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/self.jpg 1340w, https:\/\/bentonenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/self-300x111.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bentonenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/self-1024x382.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bentonenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/self-500x186.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1340px) 100vw, 1340px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>bildungsroman<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>bill-DUNGZ-ro-men<\/em>, German for\u00a0<i>&#8220;formation novel&#8221;<\/i>) is a genre of the novel which focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood. \u00a0The driving force behind the plot (and the major impact of the work) is the main character&#8217;s search for self, so change is thus extremely important.<\/p>\n<p>The birth of the bildungsroman\u00a0is normally dated to the publication of\u00a0Goethe\u2019s\u00a0<i>The Apprenticeship of Wilhelm Meister<\/i>\u00a0in 1796. \u00a0Although the bildungsroman\u00a0originated in Germany, it has had extensive influence first in Europe and later throughout the world. \u00a0Thomas Carlyle\u00a0translated Goethe\u2019s novel into English, and after its publication in 1824, many British authors wrote novels inspired by it (e.g. Dickens&#8217; <em>Great Expectations<\/em>).<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bildungsroman#cite_note-4\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>A bildungsroman\u00a0tells about the growing up or coming of age of a sensitive person who is looking for answers and experience. \u00a0The genre evolved from folklore tales of an idiot or youngest son going out in the world to seek his fortune. \u00a0Usually in the beginning of the story there is an emotional loss which makes the protagonist leave on his or her journey. \u00a0In a bildungsroman, the goal is maturity, and the protagonist achieves it gradually and with difficulty. \u00a0The genre often features an underlying conflict between the main character and society. \u00a0Typically, the values of society are gradually accepted by the protagonist, and he or she is ultimately accepted into society \u2013 the protagonist&#8217;s mistakes and disappointments are over. \u00a0In some works, the protagonist is able to reach out and help others after having achieved maturity.<\/p>\n<p>Incoming AP Lit students, take note of how both <em>Siddhartha<\/em> and <em>Jane Eyre<\/em>, each after their own unique fashion, follow this structure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The bildungsroman\u00a0(bill-DUNGZ-ro-men, German for\u00a0&#8220;formation novel&#8221;) is a genre of the novel which focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood. \u00a0The driving force behind the plot (and the major impact of the work) is &hellip;
